Practice Teaching

On the second week and continuing into the third week I did teaching practice in each classes. Then the next week will be a quiz because it has completed one sub material and I was in charge of controlling the class.

For the fourth week I will do the demons teaching. following details report:

1.      Teaching Pratice

1.1. Procedures of teaching

I was assigned by my cooperating teacher to teach in grade 11 with the topic was probability especially about Introducing to Hypothesis Testing. My cooperating teacher gave me 20 hours/week for the teaching practicum. Before entering the class, I prepared some of materials such as lesson plan, student activity, worksheet, Power point and some of markers. My cooperating teacher also help me to provide all of the thing included print my lesson plan, student activity and worksheet.
I used Cooperative Learning with Problem Solving type and scientific approach for this lesson and used teaching system was the student-centered learning which is students will be able to explore and to build their own knowledge beside the teacher acts as a facilitator to improve students’ knowledge.

1.2. Time management and organizing activites

According to Cooperative Learning with Problem Solving type and scientific approach, I was divided time allocation for the learning in the class by 3 part. First was an opening activity, second was the main activity, and the last was the closing activity.
In the opening activity, students greeted me. Then I told them about topic of the day and purposes of studying probability and I gave some apperception about the topic that we will learn and motivation why we should to learn about the topic?
In the main activity, I used the power point to explain them about the materials then I provided some example and asked them to try to solve the problem together. After a few minutes, we discussed together the solution for the problem. I also gave them some adding problems to make them more understand about the topic. At last, I gave them a problem that who the first done it would get the special price from me, and they did it seriously.
In the closing activity, I asked the students about their understanding of material. Then I closed the lesson.

1.3. Problem Solving

While they were doing the student activity, if there were some of problem they can discussed it to me. Sometimes the students can’t understand well when I speak in English because we had difference pronunciation, but then my cooperating teacher would give them the adding explanation in Tagalog.

1.4. Classroom management

According to the situation and condition in the classroom, sometimes the students would be a little bit noisy because there were 55 students in one class. But, I told them about my hand symbol of keeping silent which I always use in Indonesia. They understood it, so that, when they was noisy, I just gave them the hand symbol and my cooperating teacher also help me to manage the class.

It also will be my last week in this school. I learned many things here and I got many experiences of being a teacher in this TIP Senior High School. I also thank to my cooperating teacher that always teach and help me in the classroom to know and getting more knowledge.
It will be a very precious experience ever for me to be a future teacher. ^_^

Second week: Making Lesson Plan

During the second week of school, I did an observation of the lesson plan and created a lesson plan that I would use for my teaching practice. here are the details of my observations.

1.      Teaching Plan

1.1. Curriculum

Curriculum in T.I.P. Senior High School is based on DepEd ORDER No. 8 s.2015 Policy Guidelines on Classroom Assessment for the K-12 Basic Education Program.

1.2. Teaching Plan (Mathematic Major)

Teaching plan or lesson plan is a teacher’s detailed description of the course of instruction, or ‘learning trajectory’ for a lesson. Teaching plan also as teacher’s guide includes the goal (what the students are supposed to learn), how to reach the goal (method, procedures), and the way to measuring how well the goal was reached (test, homework, worksheet).
T.I.P. Senior High School has teaching plan for each subject. In mathematic major, well-planned lessons or teaching plan include student activity and worksheet focused on the conceptual learning goal. Mathematic teachers should capitalize on the importance of mathematic in everyday life to engage the students. Teaching plan of mathematic includes intended learning outcomes, topic, references, materials, review, motivation, activities, analysis, abstraction of each hour activities, application, assessment and assignment.

2.      Observation on Teacher

2.1. Planning for teaching

The teacher required to make a teaching plan (lesson plan) before the teaching activity began that day. Also teacher have to prepare well all of materials needed for teaching, such as a power point for teaching or mathematics media.

2.2. Preparing lesson and materials

Teacher has been prepared tools for teaching such as book and board marker, and if the teacher wants to use media, teacher must be prepared projector, laptop, power point presentation, and media for presentation or for students’ activity.
Every time before the teaching began, teacher has already prepared well all of the lesson and materials, it makes teacher explain easily and clearly.

2.3. Teaching in class

Students always give a greeting to the teacher before the class start, then the teacher write the intended learning outcomes on the whiteboard after that teacher open the class using apperception to review the last topic before teach the new topic. Also teacher asked about topic matter before explain to know about students’ knowledge. And then the teacher explains about topic matter or materials for the day.
Teaching system was student-centered learning which teacher act as a facilitator to teach students and students will be able to explore and to build their knowledge. Furthermore, teacher and students are active side each other.

2.4. Measurement and evaluation

Teacher give a worksheets to measurement and evaluation, student must do the worksheets individually based on the topic of lesson that day. After student finished the worksheets. Sometimes, the teachers also gives homework in the end of the lesson on the day. The teacher should give examination for the students in the end of the topic.

For the next two week I'll have my practice teaching. :)

First Day of Class Observation

Today is my second day at TIP and is my first day in school for classroom observation. I was also introduced to several other lecturers, from the head of the faculty of education, the principal of Senior High School, her assistant, and also to a beautiful teacher who will be my cooperating teacher for a month at TIP and she is a math teacher of course, her name is Theresa and I usually call her "Mom Theresa". At the day, I was given a class schedule that I would go in for each week. Here's my class schedule over at TIP.

Each quarter constitute one grading period. Active days in T.I.P. Senior High School is five days, Monday-Friday.
Teaching system is student-centered learning which teacher acts as a facilitator to teach students and students will be able to explore and to build their knowledge. Furthermore, teacher and students are active side each other. It also called active learning in which students should solve the problems, answer the questions during class. The teachers just give some problems to students, and then the students solve the problems. Teacher give one example and then teacher give one question for students and give five minutes for students to answer the questions. While waiting for students to answer the questions, the teacher walked around in classroom and come one at a student desk and ask if there is difficultly to solve the questions. After five minutes, the teacher discusses the solution for the questions with the students. And then the teacher gives more questions for students until the students understood about the subject matter today.

T.I.P. Senior High School has so many materials and learning sources to support students academic. Other learning sources for students such as worksheet and extra sheets are made by teachers depends on their subjects. Every class has facilitated with Air Conditioner (AC) and fan.

Students’ measurement and evaluation based on the K-12 Basic Education Program. It uses standards- and competency-based grading system. These standards and competencies are found in the curriculum guides. Learners from grade 11 to 12 are graded on written work, performance task, and the quarterly assessment every quarter. These given specific percentage weights that vary according to the nature of the learning area.

For the Authentic Assessment, teachers uses write assessment consist of essay (measured by worksheet, tasks, mid-test, and final examination)

First Day in Technological Institute of the Philippines

On Sunday, 21 January 2018, I and my two friends arrived at NAIA airport, Manila at 2:00 am manila time. Both of my friends who were placed at University of Northern Philippines (UNP) have been picked up and I have to wait alone at the airport because I will be picked up at 7.00 in the morning. Thankfully, there are 5 delegates who were also from Indonesia precisely from Medan, they were also waiting for the pickup. I joined them and we chatted while waiting for the morning.

Hours after that, My 5 friends from Medan were picked up, we went to a different university so I was forced to wait alone at the airport. Finally, my mentor came at 7:00 am as promised. We went to Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP), Philippines. During the trip, we introduced each other, my mentor named is Mari Cris A. Azul. She will accompany me for one month I am here. My mentor explains a few things about her, what I'm going to do over here and a few things about TIP. After an hour-long journey we arrived at the TIP, and my mentor immediately took me to an apartment or so-called condo that I would occupy for a month during my time at TIP. They provide excellent living facilities. A very convenient place to be occupied and all the necessary amenities are available in this apartment from the kitchen and its furniture, bedrooms and its furniture to the fully equipped bathrooms with everything. Sadly, for one week I will stay alone in this apartment because two delegates from Valaya Alongkorn Rajhabat University (VRU), Thailand will arrive next week. On that day, after taking a short break in the condo, my mentor and I went to the TIP campus, my mentor wanted to show the location of the campus as well as the school where I would observe and teach. Starting from the office of the faculty of education to the classes and some other spaces. With a pale face for having not had breakfast and dazed eyes for having not slept all night I followed my mentor to go around for a while. After that, my mentor drove me back to the condo, and before she left we chatted for an hour. My mentor had to leave immediately and I also had to rest to let go of fatigue. Finally, I fell asleep very sleepily until the afternoon. Awake from sleep I went to prayer, that is our obligation as a Muslim.

I will start my day-to-day activities for class observation.
This is my first day’s story in manila, right on TIP. Next will be more fun and more stories and experiences as long as I run the activities here. I'll come back with the next story. :)

Farewell Banda Aceh

Friday, 19 January 2018 together with two of my friends who were also delegates from Syiah Kuala University depart from Banda Aceh to Medan, we were placed in a different university. At 10.00 am our plane took off to Medan. Arriving in Medan, I with my two friends immediately headed for the pickup because we had to hurry check in for the next flight to Kuala Lumpur. After a short break, at 2.00 pm we checked in. After waiting for an hour in line, then we got a notice that our plane headed to Kuala Lumpur had to be canceled due to a problem with the plane. After one more hour we’re waiting for certainty for our next flight, we are finally told to leave tomorrow. Initially, we were worried about having to buy another ticket to the Philippines, as we had booked the next flight ticket from Kuala Lumpur to the Philippines on that day. Thankfully, because both tickets we ordered were Air Asia, so both tickets could be canceled to the next day. Finally, on that day our flight only arrived in Medan. Although, we plan to arrive in the Philippines the next day on Saturday, but God's plan says otherwise. We had to spend the night in Medan and continue our journey the next day.

The next day, I and my two friends took the time to have breakfast at the hotel we occupied, because our flight was at 3:00 pm. After breakfast, we took some photos for our documentation as our travel experience to Manila. Here are some of our photos in Medan.

At 1:00 pm we were ready to leave for the airport. Arriving at the airport, we immediately checked in, and headed straight to the plane. The same thing happened again, our plane delayed an hour later. And finally, at 4:00 pm we flight to Kuala Lumpur.

After for 2 hours flight, we finally arrived in Kuala Lumpur. Since our plane was delayed earlier, so we only had a little time in Kuala Lumpur for picking up the goods and checking back in for Manila. In fact, we did not have time to rest for dinner. It was a very long day with a long journey. Not as smooth as we thought, we have to deal with another problem in Kuala Lumpur, because we have not bought return tickets yet. We cannot use our LoA as proof that we will return from the Philippines a month later. So after waiting for an hour and looking for a solution with ncik on the counter, at the last minute check-in deadline, finally they give us the last solution to buy the return ticket at that time. Finally, with the help of a sister from one of my friends we bought a return ticket, so we were only allowed to check in, because of a kind ncik on the counter they helped us even though the time for checking in was over. Finally, we arrived on the plane with a gasping breath because we had to run to a very remote location because it had to catch the flight time. We went to manila with a pale face because of thirst, hunger, tired, and with all the feelings we will never forget. Our journey is a very long journey, the struggle to seek new knowledge, the struggle to find new experiences and all this is for a better future. We sincerely hope that our struggle will bring good results in this student exchange program. Because we believe, results never betray the efforts. 😊
